40 Years of Spain in the European Union

In 1986, Spain and Portugal officially joined the European Union (then known as the European Communities). This historic moment marked an important turning point, strengthening cooperation between European countries and opening new opportunities for development, mobility, and collaboration.

Nearly 40 years later, this milestone offers a valuable moment to reflect on how much Spain and Europe have changed. Membership in the EU has contributed to many transformations—from economic growth and infrastructure improvements to educational programs, cultural exchange, and greater freedom to study, work, and travel across Europe.

Within the EUxFuture project, remembering these key historical moments is an important part of our mission. The project is not only about organizing activities; it is also about understanding our shared past and the changes that belonging to the European Union has brought. By reflecting on these milestones, we can better appreciate the progress that has been made and the importance of cooperation between European societies.

In the coming weeks, we will introduce a new interactive activity that combines graffiti and a quiz, inviting participants to explore important events in European history in a creative and engaging way. Spain’s accession to the EU in 1986 will be one of the moments highlighted in this activity.

Because remembering where we come from helps us build a stronger and more connected European future.
