Participatory Mural Creation in Budapest: Painting Our Common Europe

On 20 June, Dankó Udvar in Budapest became a colourful open-air workshop as participants joined the EUxFUTURE community mural painting activity. The event brought together local participants, young people, children, international guests, and project representatives for an afternoon of shared creation.

The mural design was adapted and coordinated by Daniel Labrosse, Hungarian-French painter, illustrator, and animator, who guided the painting process on site. Instead of presenting the artwork as something already finished, the activity invited participants to become part of the process: to choose colours, paint details, ask questions, and gradually help bring the mural to life.

Throughout the afternoon, the wall slowly changed as more people joined in. Some participants worked on larger colour surfaces, while others focused on smaller details. Children and young people were especially active in adding their own contribution to the mural, turning the activity into a relaxed and accessible community experience.

The painting process also created space for informal conversations. While working together, participants could learn more about the story behind the mural and the meaning of its visual elements. International guests and local participants exchanged impressions, and the act of painting side by side made the project’s themes easier to approach in a practical and personal way.

What made the Budapest mural special was this shared process. The final artwork is not only the result of an artistic design, but also of many small contributions: brushstrokes, conversations, choices, and moments of cooperation. In this way, the activity showed how public art can become a simple but powerful tool for participation and dialogue.

The Budapest mural is now part of the local environment of Dankó Udvar, where it continues to make the themes of European memory, history, and cooperation visible in everyday public space.
