Europe Day: 75 Years of Unity and Vision
In May 2025, Europe marks the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, a historic moment that laid the foundation for peace and cooperation across the continent. On 9 May 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed pooling coal and steel production among European countries — a simple but powerful idea that would make war between them not just unthinkable, but materially impossible.
This proposal led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), uniting six countries and setting the stage for what we know today as the European Union. For a continent recovering from the devastation of two world wars, it was a visionary step toward a more stable and united future.
Decades later, 9 May became officially recognised as Europe Day — a symbol of European identity and solidarity. Every year, citizens across the EU celebrate this day with festivals, public events, and debates about Europe’s journey and future. The blue flag with gold stars is flown proudly, reminding us of a shared commitment to peace, democracy, and cooperation.
In 2025, the 75th anniversary offered a unique moment to reflect on how far Europe has come. From six founding states to a union of 27 countries, the European project has brought generations closer together — creating opportunities for mobility, education, and cultural exchange. It has also shown how unity in diversity can be a force for positive change.
For the EUxFUTURE project, which explores the legacy and impact of European integration, Europe Day is more than a commemoration. It’s a chance to connect the past with the present through intergenerational dialogue, community art, and storytelling. Across five countries, the project’s activities — from interviews with elderly citizens to murals and exhibitions — highlight how Europe’s journey continues to shape lives today.
As we look ahead, Europe Day’s core message remains relevant: unity is not automatic — it’s something we build together. EUxFUTURE will continue to bring Europe’s story to life through local events, creative workshops, and discussions that invite citizens of all ages to reflect on what Europe means to them.
Whether you’re inspired by history or hopeful for the future, Europe Day is a moment to pause, remember, and imagine what kind of Europe we want to build — together.
